Two width measurements in a saw listing describe different things. Okada Hardware’s Z-Saw FAQ calls the blade’s own thickness itaatsu and the groove left by cutting kirihaba. The latter is the kerf.

Technique and structure

Z-Saw describes asari, or set, as tooth tips opening alternately outward. This makes the kerf slightly wider than the plate, reducing friction and helping sawdust escape. It also identifies unset saws for work such as cutting wooden plugs. Set therefore explains a relationship between tooth geometry and the resulting groove; it is not another name for blade thickness.

Read the unit beside the number

Pitch is the distance between teeth. TPI counts teeth in one inch, which the FAQ gives as 25.4 mm. A spacing and a count use different numerical scales. Z-Saw also notes that its rip-saw pitch varies along the blade, so a universal conversion should not be inferred for every tooth pattern.

For international readers

Check material, use, exact blade and handle compatibility separately. These definitions explain a specification sheet; they do not identify the cut width of an unlisted model.
