“Handwoven” identifies less than a complete textile specification. Ogura Shoten’s explanation of Yuki tsumugi connects the way the thread is prepared with the way tension is controlled during weaving. It also treats pattern-making as a separate job.
Technique and structure
The account describes thread drawn by hand from mawata, the silk floss prepared from cocoons, without imparting twist. On the jibata loom, the warp is fixed to the weaver’s waist so its tension can be adjusted through the body. Kasuri-kubiri has another role: cotton thread binds the portions reserved from dye to form the pattern. Yarn construction, warp tension and resist-binding thus describe different aspects of the cloth rather than interchangeable meanings of “handmade”.
Ask which claim is being documented
A description of this method does not authenticate every bolt sold as Yuki tsumugi. Ask which manufacturing details and certification documents accompany the actual cloth. Our Kurume guide concerns pattern alignment on yarn; this guide instead focuses on the relationship between thread and loom.
For international readers
Confirm the specific bolt’s label and finishing instructions. The source explanation is not a washing or stain-removal method.
