A close view of a comb raises two questions: how far apart are the teeth, and how have they been finished? Tsujichu Shoten’s workshop account treats those as different operations. That distinction is useful when a listing supplies only a photograph or a tooth-count description.
Technique and structure
The workshop describes ha-biki as cutting slots at a spacing suited to the intended use. Ha-suri then works on the tip of each tooth individually. Shaping the comb body and buffing follow as separate tasks. Before this work, selected boxwood is naturally dried, smoked and rested again, with the resting period judged from the wood’s condition. The slot pattern and the finishing of individual teeth therefore describe different decisions in making the comb.
Questions for a particular comb
Ask which spacing is offered and how the teeth are finished. This process account does not give a universal spacing measurement or establish how a specific comb will behave on a reader’s hair. It also provides no basis for a medical or antibacterial claim.
For international readers
Use the maker’s instructions for the purchased comb. The production sequence alone is not a cleaning or oiling prescription.
