The outline of an umbrella canopy conceals several separate sewing decisions. Tokyo’s craft reference identifies the direction used to join its fabric panels and a covering placed at the rib joints.
Technique and structure
The triangular fabric pieces are called koma. Joining them from the triangle’s apex toward the rib tip is identified as Kanto sewing. A different step places cloth over the dabo, the rib’s joint, to keep the frame and fabric from touching directly. Panel joining and joint covering therefore have different jobs within the same umbrella; neither detail alone establishes a finished product’s wind or rain rating.

The reference also describes sewing the canopy to the main ribs. A description of how panels become a cover is not yet a full description of how that cover is fixed to its frame.
For international readers
Ask the maker about the actual fabric, frame and intended use. No tested UV, water-resistance or wind rating is inferred from the craft name.
