A braiding stand is more than a label for a finished cord’s shape. Tokyo’s kumihimo specification links particular stands with tools and yarn preparation, giving a different question to ask from where the braid travels.

Technique and structure

For ayatake-dai or takadai, the specification requires a hera tool for beating in the work. Pattern formation on shigeuchi-dai or takadai uses aya-tori, while kago-uchi-dai uses twisted braiding yarn. These conditions belong to particular working arrangements. They should not be combined into one universal recipe for all kumihimo: a requirement tied to one stand does not automatically apply to the others.

Materials and colour remain separate

The same reference lists raw silk, silk yarn, gold thread or silver thread, and distinguishes plain, shaded and stepped yarn dyeing. A stand name alone does not identify which of those materials or colour treatments appears in a particular cord.

For international readers

Ask the workshop about the actual stand, yarn and working method. This account establishes no breaking load or suitability as a safety cord.
