A Tokyo butsudan is a household Buddhist altar cabinet. Its official craft description gives separate information about the assembled wooden body, carved work and urushi finish.
Technique and structure
For the wooden body, Tokyo lists kendome, chigiridome and mortise-and-tenon construction within an assembled structure. The carving methods include openwork, while the finish is specified as rubbed refined urushi. Reading these statements separately avoids treating a visible wood surface as a complete construction description: the joint arrangement and the surface treatment answer different questions about the same cabinet.
The wood still needs its own identification
The material list includes mulberry, zelkova, hinoki and other named woods or equivalent materials. It does not identify the timber in an individual cabinet.
For international readers
For an actual commission, request its wood, construction and finish specification. The craft reference provides no dismantling instructions or universal repair procedure.
