Tama ori names a group of silk textiles associated with Hachioji. Tokyo’s craft reference lists five kinds, making the regional name less specific than an individual weave description.

Technique and structure

The specification distinguishes omeshi, tsumugi, futsu, kawari-tsuzure and mojiri. For futsu it specifies double weaving using a jacquard or dobby loom; for mojiri it specifies a crossed-warp weave using a jacquard loom. Omeshi and tsumugi may use plain, twill, satin or variations. Thus, the group name does not select one cloth structure. Asking which member of the group a fabric belongs to is a useful first step before discussing its yarn or surface.

Read the yarn separately

The traditional materials include raw silk, dupion silk or silk-floss spun yarn. This is a range, not a blend statement for every bolt.

For international readers

Ask the maker for the particular weave, yarn and care instructions. The regional designation alone supplies no washing or shrinkage specification.
