An oke’s circular outline does not explain how its sides were made. Kagawa Prefecture’s Kagawamono craft reference describes Sanuki oke and taru through their parts: narrow boards, copper hoops and a bottom board. It is a construction description, not a specification for every vessel currently sold.

Technique and structure

The reference says narrow boards made from Yoshino cedar, fir or hinoki are arranged into a cylinder, tightened with copper hoops and fitted with a bottom board. Those details distinguish the assembled sidewall from the hoop holding it around its circumference and the board closing the base. Reading the three together is more informative than treating the visible band as decoration. The description does not identify the wood species, adhesive or finish of an individual object merely from its round shape.

A construction used for different objects

The same reference lists sushi tubs, rice containers and bath buckets alongside newer lunch boxes and interior products. Shared construction vocabulary is therefore not a shared instruction for heat, cleaning or food storage. The intended use still belongs with the particular maker’s specification.

For international readers

Ask for the actual product’s wood, finish and use instructions. Neither a regional name nor the presence of a copper hoop establishes antibacterial effects, dishwasher suitability or an uncoated food-contact surface.
