Two hand-forming workshops can involve clay without starting from the same shape. Sapporo Art Park’s group courses give a concrete comparison: a cup made from a clay ball, and a shallow plate made from a slab. The method names are more informative than a general pottery-experience label.

Technique and structure

In the park’s tamatsukuri course, the participant presses outward from the centre of a ball of clay with a thumb. Its slab-formed plate course instead begins with roughly 500 grams of clay flattened into a sheet, whose edge is then raised. The distinction is between opening out a compact mass and building from a flat starting form. These are the two courses’ specified approaches, not evidence that every hand-built cup or plate follows the same method.

Shaping day is not collection day

Both descriptions say the work is fired afterward and mailed about two months after the session. They also specify consolidated delivery to a group representative. A short making session therefore should not be read as a promise to leave with a finished ceramic vessel.
