The wooden part of an oyako daruma’s making is not necessarily part of the finished object. Yamanashi’s process account explicitly separates forming the paper body from removing it from its mould.
Technique and structure
The mould is carved from pine. Paper made for daruma is soaked for a day and a night, drained, softened and applied to the mould, with the application repeated three to four times. After drying, the maker cuts an opening and takes the body off the mould. The pine therefore supplies a forming surface for the paper shell; it should not be described as a solid wooden core left inside.
The white ground comes later
The listed finishing work applies a gofun ground before the overall colouring. That coating is separate from the paper layers that establish the body’s form.
For international readers
Ask the maker about the actual surface and display conditions. This process explanation provides no moisture-resistance or handling specification for an individual piece.
