An enamelled vessel can contain several different metal elements. The Shippo Art Village’s technical reference separates the outline wire from the material beneath the enamel. Those terms describe construction, rather than interchangeable levels of decoration.

Technique and structure

For yusen shippo, the museum describes thin, tape-like metal wire, mainly silver, placed upright along a design on a copper or silver base. Enamel fills the spaces before firing and polishing. It separately defines gintai as a silver base and ginbari as silver foil applied over a copper base beneath transparent or translucent enamel. A silver-coloured line and a silver body therefore identify different parts of an object.

Ask which part a material claim describes

A useful catalogue description should distinguish base, wire and any foil layer. The museum also describes wireless techniques, so the absence of visible outlines is not enough to identify a different base metal. These distinctions help interpret a label without attributing a method to an unexamined object.
