The Nishijima papermaking sequence includes a second wet stage after an extended sun-drying period. Yamanashi’s craft reference makes that order explicit, rather than ending the process at the first drying stage.

Technique and structure

The account puts slow pressing on the day after sheet formation, over the course of a day. It then describes about a month of sun drying. The paper is subsequently wetted again in a tank, separated sheet by sheet and brushed onto a dryer. Pressing, sun drying and the later dryer operation are therefore different stages, with rewetting connecting the latter two. This local process description should not be reduced to a generic claim that handmade paper is simply left in the sun.

Ask which paper is being described

The prefecture lists varied raw materials and several paper products. Its process account does not mean every sheet has the same fibre blend or response to ink. For an enquiry, ask whether the named sheet follows this sequence and which raw materials the maker uses.

For international readers

For an actual sheet, confirm its composition and intended medium with the supplier. This explanation gives no universal absorbency or archival-lifespan rating.
