Miyama’s manufacturing reference describes casting as a way of shaping liquid porcelain clay in a plaster mould. The mould’s role comes before the later firing that makes the vessel into finished ceramic ware.
Technique and structure
The porous plaster absorbs water from the clay slip so that a form develops. Miyama identifies pressure casting for plates, bowls and cups, including divided or angular shapes. It separately identifies drain casting for forms such as pots and vases whose mouths are narrower than their bodies. These are distinctions in forming method and geometry, rather than two names for the kiln firing.
A forming description is not a care label
The maker also describes bisque firing, decoration, glazing and final firing as separate operations. Knowing how a shape was formed does not by itself verify its final glaze, decorative treatment or permitted household use.
