A brush head is an arrangement of selected hairs, not just a bundle trimmed to a point. The Kumano brush cooperative’s writing-brush account distinguishes mixing, core formation and the wrapping of outer hairs. Its description gives a way to read the head’s construction before discussing any particular brush model.
Technique and structure
In neri-maze, cut hairs are spread thinly with a little paste and repeatedly folded together until evenly mixed, while unsuitable hairs are removed. The maker then uses a tubular koma to bring one brush’s quantity toward its intended thickness and form. After the core is dried, a layer of prepared outer hairs, koromo-ge, is wrapped around it. The cooperative gives this outer layer a structural role as well as a visual one: it helps keep the core’s shorter hairs from emerging. Mixing the core and wrapping its exterior are thus distinct decisions about hair placement.
Shaping paste is a separate detail
The account later describes paste being worked into the assembled head, combing and removal of excess paste before drying and capping. That final shaping stage does not replace the earlier selection and arrangement of hairs. The construction cannot be reduced to the finished outline seen when a new brush is capped.
The source is specifically about shohitsu, writing brushes. This guide does not transfer its sequence to every cosmetic brush or endorse an unidentified product as an authorised branded brush.
For international readers
For a particular writing brush, ask the seller about hair composition, head construction and intended use. No claim about the writing feel of an untested model or a universal cleaning procedure is made here.
