A white outline on a dyed banner is the result of work done before the surrounding colour. Yamanashi’s Koshu musha-nobori and koinobori reference describes paste placement and soybean liquid as separate operations on cotton cloth.
Technique and structure
The maker applies paste along the design with a tsutsu-gawa applicator, following a drawing lit from underneath. Soybean liquid is applied before colouring and is also mixed into the pigment used with an Edo hake brush. A later water wash removes the paste and reveals the white outline. The temporary paste line and the colour mixture therefore have different jobs. Reading them as stages of one process is more useful than treating every ingredient as a colourant.
Cloth is dyed before the final form
The account specifies 100 percent cotton, then lists sun drying and making up the finished banner after washing. It also notes that outdoor drying cannot proceed on rainy or windy days. These are process conditions, not a promise of a delivery date.
