A polished stone carving has passed through more than one abrasive operation. Yamanashi’s Koshu crystal-work reference separates shaping stages from the final polishing material.

Technique and structure

The process lists silicon-carbide abrasive at 0.5 mm for rough work, 0.05 mm for the middle stage and 0.005 mm for finish grinding, followed by chromium-oxide polishing. These are the reference’s particle diameters, not knife-whetstone grit numbers. The change in material at the last stage matters as much as the decreasing particle size: calling the entire sequence polishing loses that distinction.

Begin with the actual stone

The same account starts by examining the rough stone’s shape, markings and flaws before deciding what to make. Its named abrasive sequence describes professional manufacture, not a home-repolishing prescription.

For international readers

Ask the maker about the actual stone and finish. A glossy photograph cannot establish the abrasive sequence used.
