A woven cloth begins with a thread, but the thread itself can embody substantial handwork. Ogimi Village’s account of Kijoka bashofu describes fibre preparation and joining before the loom is involved. Read this as a making-process reference, rather than a care label.
Technique and structure
Ogimi identifies itobasho as the plant used for bashofu. After extracting and preparing its fibres, the maker uses a small knife to split them to a thickness chosen for their intended use, then joins them with weaver’s knots. The village notes that consistent thread thickness and the absence of unevenness affect the cloth’s quality. In this context, hand-joining names the construction of usable thread from fibre; it is a separate task from interlacing threads on the loom.
Keep making conditions separate from care
The village also describes moisture control during weaving because the fibres can break when dry. That statement concerns manufacture. It does not provide a washing routine for a finished garment with its own dyes, tailoring and condition.
