The colours associated with Kihachijo are only part of its making. Tokyo’s craft specification also names the weaving structures and the tool used to insert the weft.
Technique and structure
The reference specifies yarn-dyed plain or twill weave and a hand-thrown shuttle for the weft. Dyeing is by hand immersion, using plant dyes made from kobunagusa, tabunoki or shii, with charcoal or mud listed as mordants. These are separate parts of the specification: a description of the dye materials should not replace an explanation of the weave or shuttle work.
A process description is not a care label
The listed silk materials include raw silk, dupion silk and silk-floss spun yarn, or materials of equivalent quality. That range does not state the composition of every item sold under the regional name.
