A “round stand” does not mean that every braid made on it must be round. Kumihimo Hirai’s equipment guide identifies both round and flat braids as possibilities on a marudai.
Technique and structure
On the marudai, yarn comes through the opening in the upper board and the developing braid descends. The takadai uses a different arrangement: the worker sits within the stand, with yarn carried to either side, and follows ayagaki instructions while using a bamboo tool to settle the structure. The equipment names describe working arrangements, not interchangeable labels for one process.
Separate shape from the working method
Hirai describes the takadai as capable of complex patterns using many bobbins. That does not establish the stand used for an unlabelled cord, or mean that a flat braid must have been made on a takadai.
