A folded silk element is only part of a tsumami kanzashi. Tokyo’s craft specification distinguishes cutting and folding the pieces from placing them on a backing.
Technique and structure
The specified cloth is habutae. It is cut into squares on a cutting board, using tools including a cutting knife and wooden ruler. Folding may use methods named maru, kaku, suji or uragaeshi tsumami. In the separate fuki placement operation, tweezers arrange the folded pieces on a backing card. The cut square, its fold and its position within the assembled ornament therefore carry different information about how the final form was made.
Identify the operation before the motif
A flower or bird shape is a finished arrangement, rather than the name of one universal fold. The reference’s separate folding and placement stages give a more precise way to ask about the work.
For international readers
Ask which cloth and making methods belong to the actual ornament. This explanation provides neither a pattern to copy nor a cleaning method.
