The raised image on an oshie hagoita is more than colour applied to a board. Tokyo’s reference separates making padded pieces from joining those pieces into the finished composition.

Technique and structure

For oshie, cotton is placed between a pattern card and fabric, and a kote tool is used for gluing. Once the individual parts are complete, the assembly operation works from the back with washi and the kote. The specification separately identifies paulownia for the board, silk or cotton for the covering fabric, and cotton inside. The padding, backing connections and wooden support thus belong to different parts of the object’s construction.

The support does not identify every surface material

Calling the board paulownia leaves the fabric and filling unspecified. A description of the actual piece should identify those materials separately.

For international readers

Ask the maker about the support, textile and display conditions. This account is not a repair procedure and reproduces no figure, costume design or pattern card.
