Edo hyogu includes mounted scrolls as well as folding screens and fusuma. Tokyo’s technical reference treats their underlying construction separately, so a decorative border does not describe the whole job.
Technique and structure
For scrolls, the account requires wrinkle-free first lining and additional lining that evens the material’s thickness and stiffness. The final backing is worked with smoothing and beating brushes. For screens, the specified hinge construction instead uses strong washi with an aisa spacer to form looseness in the joint. A lining layer and a paper hinge therefore have different tasks: one prepares the mounted material, while the other belongs to the screen’s articulation.
A commission starts with the object
The reference separately lists paper, textile, frame components and starch paste. Identifying a visible textile border alone cannot establish the backing or the construction supporting it.
For international readers
Discuss the actual work and its condition with a professional mounter. This is an explanation of craft vocabulary, not a home restoration procedure or a promise of archival life.
