A regional lacquerware name is a starting point, not a complete material specification. The Echizen Lacquerware Cooperative’s process reference covers wooden products as well as synthetic-resin bodies and chemical coatings. Reading the body and the finish separately avoids combining those different facts into one assumption.
Technique and structure
The cooperative distinguishes round wooden forms made on a lathe from angular forms made by cutting, shaping and assembling wood or lacquerware plywood. It separately describes synthetic-resin moulding and spray application of lacquer or chemical coatings. These are two axes of construction: what gives the object its shape, and what is applied to its surface. A wooden body alone does not identify the coating, while a coating description alone does not identify the body.
Turn the label into two questions
Ask for the substrate first and the coating second. The reference also separates substrate preparation, coating and decoration as specialist work within the production area. That division is useful background for understanding why a brief regional label cannot answer every material question.
For international readers
Request the exact item’s material, finish and care information. This guide does not rank natural lacquer against chemical coatings or infer dishwasher, microwave or heat compatibility from the regional name.
