An abacus combines parts with different manufacturing histories. The Banshu Soroban cooperative’s account describes bamboo rods separately from shaped wooden beads, then shows how assembly brings them together. This is a construction guide, not a claim about learning outcomes.

Technique and structure

The cooperative describes cutting and splitting bamboo, then turning it into round slender rods. Beads begin with wood cut into slices, punched into round blanks and shaped further. The rods are inserted into the central crosspiece before beads are threaded on during assembly. After fixing the parts, sanding and polishing complete the work. Rod material, bead shaping and assembly therefore answer separate questions about the object.

Materials should be named part by part

Ask which material a seller is identifying: bead, rod or frame. This short process reference does not name a universal bead-wood species, a standard dimension or a performance grade. Those details need evidence for the particular abacus.
