Copper colouring gives ABE’s latest TOBIRA announcement its technical focus. On October 1, the wooden-door maker introduced two additions to its interior-door collection: sabi “blue” and sabi “copper pink”.
Colouring the copper
ABE traces the treatments to colouring techniques used for Takaoka copperware in Toyama. Its description of blue involves heating copper in a vessel containing mixed chemicals, then exposing it to inorganic-compound vapour. For copper pink, rice bran is applied to copper sheet and burned with a burner, leaving marks from the bran.
The company distinguishes this metal-colouring process from painting. The notice identifies these as interior-door works, without a full material or layer specification.
ABE says the works can be viewed at ABE galerie_TOKYO, 1-7-10 Shinjuku, Tokyo. Its current showroom guidance requires reservations and normally closes on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Weekend visits require a request at least two weeks ahead, rather than assuming walk-in access.
